What I did before taking up a franchise:
As a mechanical fitter I worked for several well-known companies including Firestone, Del Monte and other household names; most recently I worked for MFI.
How I raised the finance:
I raised the finance for my Kwiklite franchise from my own resources.
The training and support I receive from my franchisor:
The support I've had from Kwiklite has been fantastic, starting from our initial meeting right through to practical assistance with finding customers. Initial training was very practical and hands-on, including a week with existing franchisees and time with the MD to become familiar with budgeting, administration and all the other obligations that go with being self-employed. Ongoing support from the whole team has been excellent and the operation is straight-forward and seems to be gathering momentum without too much effort.
The challenges I have faced:
Getting to grips with the computer software and disciplining myself to keep careful records. Being out with customers is a pleasure and the job itself is simple. The business side was something outside of my experience but with Kwiklite's support I picked it up very quickly.
My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise:
Study the options carefully. Some franchise companies make big promises and need a huge amount of investment which is scary when you have a family and responsibilities. Make sure you can do the job required and choose a franchise that has manageable financial criteria, a good support programme and realistic forecasts.
My plans for the future:
I realised very quickly the potential of Kwiklite and my plan would be to extend my territory and so expand my customer base.
